Sherkin Island Marine Station

Sherkin Island Marine Station is a small independent research station in southwest Ireland, situated on 16 acres at the northwest corner of Sherkin Island, Co. Cork. It was founded in 1975 by the late Matt and Eileen Murphy to record, for future generations, baseline data on the flora and fauna of Sherkin Island and the surrounding area, and to raise awareness of the marine environment in Ireland.

Until 2015, the Station carried out long-term monitoring programmes on flora and fauna. It was made possible with the help of many volunteers over the lifetime of the Station. For more information on Sherkin Island Marine Station see “About“.

Survey work at Sherkin Island Marine Station has concluded and we are now archiving the data. SeeĀ DatasetsĀ for information on published data. To help fund the archiving process, the Station’s publications remain available for purchase on the Publications page.
